Yeah, Mr. Green completely missed the point here. R. V. Young is hardly 'ra-ra' about Western culture in the uncritical and doctrinaire way that Green seems to think he is. His appreciation of Shakespeare's fundamentally 'conservative' sensibility emerges out of a deep erudition and a genuinely complex understanding of early modern culture, not out of the sort of glib posturing evidenced in Green's few vague gestures at some aspects of a few of Shakespeare's plays that he finds 'unattractive'. Young's view is an utterly different thing from the straw man that Green sets up here to torch.

Methinks you are misreading Dr. Young pretty egregiously here. When examined in the greater context of his work, the notion that Shakespeare's "plays and poems disappear" in Young's vision is quite strange, especially to those of us who studied Shakespeare with him at North Carolina State University. I had the privilege of taking multiple classes with Dr. Young, including one specifically on Shakespeare's latter plays, and I assure you that there was nothing about them that "disappeared" in the course of the class. Dr. Young is a man intensely devoted to the meat content of his subjects, especially including Shakespeare.

It seems to me shameful to read one column by an author and then propose a whole criticism of his "vision" based on it. Have you read anything else by Dr. Young? Have you ever met him? Those who have done those things, even if they disagree with his analyses, would never find themselves in honesty capable of characterizing his approach to Shakespeare in the manner that you have.
