It is evident you appreciate on many levels American Renaissance, but you really sell it short when you say "maybe books like Matthiessen's were written according to a "scholarly" model that is ultimately inappropriate for the appreciation of literature" ........ given your thoughtful analysis, and seemingly reluctant denial to add American Renaissance to your "list" , I do hope this comment is tongue in cheek, or intentionally ironic........ I think the way Matthiessen fleshes out this period in literature and connects so many disparate dots is not only remarkable, but exquisitely entertaining.
